The Broken Hill 220/22kV substation serves as a critical connection point for supplying the Essential Energy networks in the region. Additionally, it facilitates the connection of the Silverton Wind Farm and the Broken Hill Solar Plant. This substation is integral to the broader Southwestern NSW network, crucial for supporting the development of renewable energy zones and ensuring a consistent flow of energy to the Far West region of NSW.
TransGrid has identified that the secondary systems at Broken Hill substation have reached the end of their serviceable life. This situation is exacerbated by the obsolescence of existing technology at the manufacturer level, resulting in scarcity of spare parts. Consequently, the reliability of any primary asset connected to the substation may be compromised.
The 220kV and 22kV secondary systems need has been considered in the context that the associated 22kV primary equipment is also reaching a condition that reflects the end of serviceable life.
Amplex played a crucial role in supporting this upgrade by supplying Medium Voltage cables and Low Voltage Cables with efficiency, supporting the contractor on this important project upgrade. Enabling the integration of renewable energy, crucial for reducing fossil fuel reliance.
