When is an electrical enclosure weatherproof?

We often get asked if our enclosures are weatherproof, and if they can be used outdoors.

The simple answer is yes. The minimum IP rating for any Amplex enclosure is IP55, meaning protection against harmful deposits of dust and low pressure jets of water from any direction (see out IP Ratings Explained article).

Terms like “weatherproof” or “outdoor rated” are very general and open to interpretation. To be “weatherproof”, a switchboard or control panel can be rated as low as IP23.

Obviously for outdoor switchboards, the higher the rating the better. That’s why at Amplex our enclosure designs incorporate the highest possible IP ratings.
